Always avoid looking down at the gear lever. You should have a mental picture of the gear layout. This will enable you to change gear without looking at the diagram on top of the gear lever. Your eyes should be on the road. With practice, changing gear becomes second nature. Vist www.2Pass.co.uk The complete resource for all your FREE Learner Driver information

what car is that? the gearbox isn’t smooth enough… you hold the gearstick in a very interesting way.
He’s granny shifting.
dats the thing that confuses me how would you know which gears to use at certain times
i’m falling asleep… no offence
sound goes half way through or is it me? lolx
mate could you start off with how to start a car and all that first time stuff plzz?
god that shitbox is ugly
@SuperPoida pardon?
@FlyingPuma112 Phone up an instructor… pay for a lesson, i just had my first today.. Safety checks, Push pulls steering, Pulling off and i had a 20 min drive around… So if u wana learn how to start. have a lesson
The way you hold the gear lever isn’t to my liking. It makes shifting from 4th to 2nd very awkward.
@DaysOfThePhoenixx um he’s driving!?
@Chris4Pris 1st is used to pull away, change to 2nd at around 10-15mph, 3rd at 25mph, 4th at 30-35mph and 5th at 40+mph
when you are upshifting, do you need to take your foot off the gas pedal?
@gyghost Yes, if you don’t it will rev up and lurch forwards when you bring the clutch up in the higher gear. This can also cause wheel spins if the road is slippery (mainly 2nd)
@fzotya22 he holds it like that so that the palm of his hand faces the direction of the gear change, to reduce the chance of shifting into the wrong gear.
@ScreenFlavour Reverse is always a pain in the butt…
@DDRGURU56 And?
hi when you change up a gear are you ment to slowy remove pressure from the clutch before you press the gas or can you release pressure from the clutch straight away after you have selected the right gear then hit gas, or can you release pressure from the clutch and use the gas at the same time.
Thanks
@bobyzeka Experimentation is the best way to find your answer as it all depends on the speed your doing and if the road is level, up or down hill. With practice and good timing you can bring the clutch up quite quickly without jerking if the gas is timed right. Bringing the clutch up smoothly is your best bet and try to put a little gas at the same time
@www2passcouk is it ok stay to skip first gear completely and go straight to second gear?
@www2passcouk say ur in second gear, and u reach a redlight, is it ok if you dont downshift to 1st gear?
some people are not aware the clutch does not even need to be fully pressed to enage the gear. most cars there is no need to fully press the cluitch all the way to the floor as you are have already reached the point needed to engage 1st gear. it depends on the vehicle but most some cars only require a quater or half way down amount of cluth movement on the pedal. alot of instructors never teach people this. you only need to push slightly past the biting point further is not necessary
high there, nice vid. I was wondering, im a learner and im having trouble with the down shifting when coming to a stop at a junction, roundabout, traffic jam, lights ect. It would be extremly helpfull if you could give me some tips on how to do this. Thanks.
@MrDeano324 If you know your coming to a stop then try and gently push the stick towards 1st when your at a slow walking pace. That way it will fall in easy and you’ll be ready to go if you need to. If you try and select 1st when your stationary you might have to push harder or even bring the clutch briefly up and down before it will go in gear.
This is mentioned in the DSA’s book ‘Driving Essential Skills’
